IGNOU School of Health Sciences starts using SMS Alerts Service

This is a major break through. SOHS is the recent addition to the list of Schools of IGNOU that are using SMS Alerts Service. SOHS started using SMS Alerts Service from February 29, 2012. The interest shown by Dr.Biplab Jamatia and Dr.T.K.Jena, Director of SOHS to start SMS Alerts Service can be gauged by the frequency at which SOHS is using the service. Appr. 14910 messages were sent today alone. Definitely, students of SOHS across the country stand to benefit from this service as they receive updates immediately by SMS as and when they happen. Today, they informed by SMS about the list of lectures that are uploaded to Youtube. There is no way earlier for any student to know that a lecture pertaining to their discipline was uploaded. SMS made it possible. Of course, I can keep continuing writing about the benefits of SMS service to the students endlessly. Anyway, let me stop here. I wish you all a VERY HAPPY HOLI. RC, Shimla starts using SMS Alerts Service

I am glad to post that IGNOUs Regional Center at Shimla started using SMS Alerts Service from February 21st, 2012. Again, as in the case of some RCs which started using the service, its the impact of STRIDE's refresher programme. Dr.Mohan Sharma, Assistant Regional Director from RC, Shimla attended the programme and is quick enough to start the service at RC, Shimla as soon as he returned. From now-on-wards, learners of IGNOU in the jurisdiction of RC, Shimla will find that information is reaching them by SMS in no time and will have enough time to follow up. I thank Dr.Mohan Sharma for the initiative which will benefit all the learners and other stake holders of IGNOU in Himachal Pradesh.

RC, Bangalore test runs SMS Alerts Service

IGNOU Regional Center at Bangalore had test run the SMS Alerts Service on February 15th, 2012. I thank and congratulate Dr.M.S.Parthasarathy, Regional Director who took the initiative to start the SMS service at RC, Bangalore as soon as he took office as RD for RC, Banglaore. Despite Bangalore being one of the nodal points for most of the top Information Technology Companies , RC, Bangalore has been a late entrant of using the SMS service which was provided to them in 2010. I personally feel that this service at RC,Bangalore will give a feel to the learners of IGNOU that IGNOU embraced IT to update them as fastest communication is possible only with SMS.: P.V.Suresh

RC, Panaji starts using SMS Alerts Service

RC, Panaji started using SMS Alerts Service from February 14th, 2012. I thank Dr.Srinivas, ARD who took the initiative based on his interaction during my lecture in refresher programme organized by STRIDE in Jan-Feb. 2012. So, again, as has been the experience with any RC which started using SMS service, the communication gap between learners and RC at Panaji will be significantly reduced. In fact, RC, Panaji can now start reducing the paper based communications with learners and start using SMS increasingly wherever appropriate. RC,Koraput starts using SMS Alerts Service

IGNOU Regional Center at Koraput launched SMS Alerts Service on Feb. 13th, 2012. This will enable RC, Koraput to send all appropriate communications to its learners by SMS which will significantly reduce the communication gap. The efforts made by Dr.Anand, Assistant Regional Director, Koraput RC to initiate SMS Alerts Service at RC, Koraput are commendable. IGNOU Regional Center at NOIDA starts using SMS alerts service

It's indeed a good news. IGNOU RC at Noida (relatively, a new RC) started using SMS alerts service from September 21st, 2011. They have a total of appr. 10000 learners. So, they all stand benefited from it. Of course, they must have had mobiles. The students who did not enter their mobile numbers in admission form may communicate their number to rcnoida@ignou.ac.in We are hoping that RC, Noida will use the SMS service to its complete potential to enable students to receive maximum benefit. The 3 RCs in Delhi have been using the service extensively.

SMS your queries to IGNOU

As mentioned in my first post, now it is possible to SMS your queries to IGNOU. There is no need to access Internet and send e-mail to IGNOU. There is no need to keep on periodically logging to your e-mail account to check whether you received response to your query. SMS your query to IGNOU and also receive response by SMS.

Prefix your query with IGNOU followed by a space followed by query. SMS it to 9223051616. You will receive acknowledgement immediately. In due course, you will receive response by SMS.

IGNOU launched SMS alerts service on November 18th,2008. The inaugural SMS was given to appr. 40000 learners across India by IGNOU VC Prof.V.N.Rajasekharan Pillai in the presence of PVCs and Directors. IGNOU is having a total of 3.1 million learners spread across the World. However, appr. 90% of the students belong to India. With the launch of SMS service, the communication gap between IGNOU and its learners has significantly reduced. The learners have 3 places to contact for resolution of any of their queries. They are Study Centers, Regional Centers and Headquarters. In 2008, when SMS service was launched, it was available only at Headquarters located at Delhi. Any department which wants to send SMS will e-mail the message to HQs and SMS will go from HQs. There are large number of such requests to send SMS by e-mail from RCs as well as SCs and other departments of IGNOU.

Chennai (Tamilnadu) was the first RC to have SMS alerts service after HQs in 2009. It was followed by Portblair(Andaman and Nicobar Islands), Guwahati(Assam), Itanagar(Arunachal Pradesh) and Imphal(Manipur).

In 2010, SMS alerts service was implemented across all the RCs, Schools, Divisions, Centers,Units and Cells of IGNOU. This enabled each and every constituent department of IGNOU to send communications by SMS to the learners and other stake holders attached to them.

By the time of this post, the number of SMS that were sent already crossed 1 crore.

On July 24th, 2011, Dr.Latha Pillai, PVC launched the second leg of SMS service that enables any person across the Globe to send SMS to IGNOU. The service enabled millions of IGNOU learners across the Globe to SMS their queries to IGNOU. Earlier, they used to send queries using e-mail or post. The current facility enables all IGNOU learners as well as other stake holders to send their queries to IGNOU by SMS with out accessing Internet. IGNOU is receiving appr. 200 queries per day by SMS since its launch in July, 2011.
